The Oberth class is a mid-sized Federation starship used primarily by Starfleet and civilian scientists alike as a scout and/or science vessel. Designed and used almost exclusively for the study of astronomical phenomena (including data gathering missions on stars and planets) these vessels can nonetheless serve in other limited capacities, such as transports and supply ships.
